The internet is full of back-to-school tools that want to help you get on top of anxiety in your children. There are many fear-reducing products and toys out there that promise to jumpstart your youngster’s anxious state, and maybe even put it to rest! What most of these products do not say is that you can take steps to stop anxiety before it starts. However, if you want to help prevent anxiety and dyslexia in your child, taking preventative measures can be a powerful way to help.

Here are a few preventative measures you can take that could help your child get on top of his or her anxiety:

Educate your child. Schools need to help their students with anxiety about school. Teachers need to talk to their students before school starts about what anxiety could mean for their ability to learn. This is important, because when kids worry about going to school, they can start to believe that they are in trouble. If they have not been talking to their teacher yet, and their anxiety is not calmed down, it is more likely that they will see school as an important focus that will derail them. Also, even if you think your child won’t care, you can offer empathy and make them feel loved. Spend time in school with your child. Visit your child in the school cafeteria at lunchtime, or take a shared play date to the playground. (This is especially important for dyslexic children, as it helps them connect with peers, especially those with the same educational needs.) Involve your child in typical school activities. In addition to the visits with teachers, let your child help you and the teachers when they work on math problems or craft plays. Give your child positive reinforcement for doing well, not only for themselves, but for doing so well for others. At the end of the school year, congratulate your child for his or her hard work. The more you give students positive reinforcement for doing well, the more likely they will do well in the future. Stress Management. If you worry about your child taking on more responsibilities or school material than they are prepared for, try to make sure that they have a lot of flexibility and that they know they have the support of their family and friends to help them succeed. It is also important to talk to your child about stress so that he or she does not put an unrealistic amount of stress on themselves.
