With a 24-hour video and audio publishing service, Digital Promise wants to revolutionize how universities report research outcomes to funders and students.

WASHINGTON, D.C.– (BUSINESS WIRE)– May 11, 2016–

Five years ago, Educause was founded on the vision of enhancing research within higher education. With that in mind, we have been excited to become one of the new funders and consultants in higher education. That excitement took on a new dimension last month when Digital Promise, a leading public policy research organization whose mission is to translate ideas into policy solutions that increase educational attainment, announced the launch of a new Public Research Portal. We believe this new resource will democratize research and make it available to students, faculty, and researchers.

The Digital Promise Public Research Portal gives higher education the ability to upload and share datasets—including databases, instruments, and searchable documents—in order to create research experience. The site features web-based analysis and portal tools, an embeddable content dashboard for centralized access, and several intuitive dashboard reports. Currently in beta, the project aims to provide administrators, researchers, and students the ability to securely share and access information relating to their research.

The Public Research Portal represents a significant milestone in our efforts to provide a robust and independent research portal that supports the collection, storage, and distribution of data in a secure manner.

With this portal, we are empowering higher education to take data out of the silos of each individual institution and onto one platform—to leverage a proven collaborative and sharing platform. By integrating secure digital data into a secure platform, we are giving higher education access to the power of open data.

Creating an Open, Community Platform

The Public Research Portal takes the best pieces of digital platforms in higher education today, such as project management, database management, hosting, and data sharing, and applies those features to public research with the goal of opening public research to the community. With the new Public Research Portal, we are striving to provide the largest and most robust repository of digital research in higher education.

Additionally, we are improving our mapping capabilities in order to let researchers compare their own projects, as well as those of other faculty. With that data, we are now able to deliver reports to the community via an online dashboard. With this data, all the University Knowledge users can easily find the kinds of research that interest them, regardless of academic disciplines or training.

Universities with a low-data research climate, like full-time postsecondary institutions, have very little data about their research outcomes. The Public Research Portal is looking to improve this situation by providing a secure platform to upload and share data. The Public Research Portal will be delivered free-of-charge to higher education, but the website is open for any research that is focused on improving institutional performance and performance reporting.

Today, we are excited to open the portal and begin gathering the information from universities to grow a research collection of over 100,000 individuals and related data.
