Does Group Thinking Help or Harm Your Business?

Group work allows for brainstorming and problem solving while allowing groups to form their own opinions. And with more and more organizations turning to these forms of team building in an effort to grow revenue and avoid burnout, how important are these processes in overall business strategy?

Leading leadership guru Steve Preziosi provides insight on this matter in his new book, Finding the Next Big Thing, the New Leader’s Handbook, which is currently available in ebook format.

According to Preziosi, the group is the most important element of winning any project, whether it’s a solo- project or a team effort. Teams can help pull people together in an action group, but a group is more powerful when it contains people that can brainstorm and make solutions on their own. As such, he believes that people who join a team are brought in to bring their expertise to the table, which they can then present to the group.

“Most importantly, a lot of people join a team to make money,” Preziosi wrote. “What they don’t realize is that a team is made up of people with different skills, attitudes, and values. The problem is that most teams have members who are super-intelligent but do not like each other, very talented but angry, too powerful and meek, or too cocky and insecure.”

Preziosi isn’t kidding when he says that people who choose to get together as a team are here to work. However, the difficulty with a team is that it makes it difficult to identify the best solution.

“One of the most important things that we have learned about teams is that they are not a magic wand that makes you successful,” he said. “This is true for each and every one of us. Teams are like atoms. They do not add up to anything substantial.”

But when teams operate “massively” well, he says, this gives rise to some very special things. And when these results become evident, so does the practical application of the lesson.

“Everyone has the right to change the world,” Preziosi wrote. “The pressure to be ‘the next big thing’ is on people of all ages and all professions. We are facing a world of unprecedented change that we are going to have to learn to live with if we are to be successful.”

This is one of the main points that Preziosi draws from his book. And that is that the more innovative ideas are borne from people who are already intrinsically motivated to succeed. He firmly believes that the most creative people are drawn to problem solving and individuals who have been consistently successful in their fields.

Preziosi was a professor in charge of conducting deep learning, computer science, and psychology at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. At the start of the 1990s, he and his wife, Melinda, wrote a bestseller, Dealing with Future Diversity in Organizations, that suggested ways for improving diversity in the workplace. The book was adapted into a television movie in 1998 and received international acclaim.
